The ADI patented iCoupler digital isolator uses patented planar magnetic field isolation technology. iCoupler technology is a patented isolation technology that is based on a chip-sized transformer, rather than the combination of leds and photodiodes used in the photocoupler. iCoupler technology because of the cancellation of the photoelectric conversion process in the photoelectric coupler, and the use of iCoupler transformer patent technology integrated transformer driver and receiving circuit, so as to achieve the photoelectric isolator incomparable performance advantages. Because the iCouple transformer is manufactured directly on the chip using a chip-level manufacturing process, the iCoupler channel is more efficient than the optocoupler for channel integration and other semiconductor functions.

Since there is no photoelectric conversion link in the photoelectric coupler that affects the efficiency, the iCoupler digital isolator does not need to drive the external circuit of the LED, and its power consumption is only 1/10 to 1/50 of the photoelectric coupler. This new electromagnetic-based isolation method is far better than the optical coupler in terms of resistance to high temperature, and the performance and reliability of the iCoupler digital isolator does not decrease at 125 ° C, so it can be used in a low-cost, small volume SOIC package, which not only reduces the cost but also reduces the size of the chip. In addition, the isolated channel of the iCoupler digital isolator has higher data transfer rate, timing accuracy and transient common mode rejection than the optocoupler. The rated isolation voltage is twice that of the high-isolation photocoupler, and the data transmission rate and timing accuracy are 10 times that of the high-isolation photocoupler. In addition, unlike the optocoupler, the multi-channel iCoupler digital isolator can provide forward and reverse communication channels within the same chip, so that the signal transmission direction can be more flexible, simplifying the hardware connection line between the chips.

More Flexible applications Unlike traditional optocouplers, the multi-channel iCoupler digital isolators provide forward and reverse communication channels within the same chip.
The isolated ends of the ADUM1201 have their own power supply and reference ground, and the power supply voltage range is between 2.7V and 5.5V, which enables low voltage supply, further reducing the system power consumption. The power supply and the reference ground need to be connected to 0.01μF to 0.1μF capacitor to filter out high-frequency interference, and the distance between the capacitor and the power supply should be within 20mm, which can achieve a better filtering effect. Because the two isolated channels are highly matched, the crosstalk between the channels is small, and the two channel input and output reverse design is very suitable for the characteristics of RS232 bus two-way transceiver, greatly simplifying the hardware connection between the isolator and the isolated ends. It should be noted that GND1 and GND2 are two different reference points, otherwise the isolation effect will not be achieved.

In addition, it should be noted that when the ADUM1201 works normally, the power supply at both ends needs to be powered on at the same time to ensure that the two channels of the ADUM1201 can work normally. If one is not powered on, the whole chip cannot work normally.
