Product Introduction

The EMC2101 is a fan controller with temperature monitoring that will take care of all of this for you. With a programmable PWMN output and tachometer input, internal and external temperature sensing, and 1°C accuracy, it's the perfect friend for any 3 or 4 pin PC fan you might find. A 4 pin PC fan has power and ground pins (those are red and black), and then two more pins. One of those extra pins, the PWM pin, allows you to set the speed of the fan. The last TACH pin is for a tachometer output S that allows the EMC2101 to monitor the speed of the fan, to make sure it's working as expected. Rather than using PWM outputs and counter inputs on your microcontroller, this chip will take care of it all for you, all the day-to-day I2C. In addition to allowing you to control the fan, the EMC2101 includes an internal temperature sensor, as well as connections for external temperature sensing diodes if you use an external temperature sensor. You can even configure a lookup table (LUT) that allows you to set different fan speeds based on temperature, and the EMC2101 will automatically adjust the speed based on temperature.

This neat little chip can easily provide cooling or ventilation for your next project.

You can even use it to help quiet down an existing project or hack out a noisy electronics with a large fan. The EMC2101 allows the fan to be slowed down when cooling needs are modest, mitigating the vibration noise created when the fan is running at full speed.

The EMC2101 BREAKOUT is delivered to you in our custom STEMMA QT form factor PCB to help you integrate the fan into your project, making it easy to use with a variety of devices. The voltage regulator and 5V tolerant pins allow you to use it with either a 3.3V or 5V microcontroller or single board computer. The included SPARKFUN Qwiic-compatible I2C bus of the STEMMA QT connector allows for easy solderless connection to your control device, and the standard header makes BREADBOARD prototyping easy.
