It is said that the EUV extreme ultraviolet lithography machine purchased by TSMC comes from the Dutch company ASML (Asma), which reportedly hides a potential fatal backdoor that can remotely trigger self destruct function if necessary.
The reason for the existence of this self destruct function and the possible timing of its use are currently unknown.
But it is currently unclear whether it really exists and how it actually works, ASML、 TSMC has not responded publicly either.
Previously, TSMC Senior Vice President Zhang Xiaoqiang publicly complained, Although the performance of ASML's latest high numerical aperture EUV lithography machine is satisfactory, the price is simply too high.
It is rumored that the price of this new lithography machine is as high as about 350 million euros (about 2.7 billion yuan), Intel has already purchased and started installing the first one, while TSMC has not had a clear procurement plan.
Earlier, Peter Wennick, the former CEO of ASML, also disclosed that in some cases, the US government would prevent ASML from providing after-sales services for some lithography machines that it had previously sold to customers in Chinese Mainland, which was quite different from his statement in mid April, when he said that the US government could not stop it.
