The latest data shows that in August 2023, the 3-month moving average released by the Japan Semiconductor Manufacturing Equipment Association (SEAJ) showed that Japan's semiconductor equipment sales were 286.504 billion yen, a year-on-year decrease of 17.5%, marking the third consecutive month of contraction. In addition, sales for the third consecutive month fell below the 300 billion yen mark, marking the largest decline since July 2019 (a year-on-year decrease of 18.8%).
However, compared to July 2023, August saw a 2.3% month on month increase, marking the second consecutive month of month on month growth.
The cumulative sales of semiconductor equipment in Japan from January to August 2023 were 2402.361 billion yen, a year-on-year decrease of 3.2%, but still reaching the second highest level in history for the same period in previous years. From January to August 2022, the sales of semiconductor equipment in Japan reached 2481.624 billion yen, setting a new record for the same period in history.
The global market share (in terms of sales) of Japanese semiconductor equipment is about 30%, ranking second only to the United States in the world.
