Arm, a global IP leader under SoftBank Group, announced the establishment of a dedicated AI chip department, with plans to develop AI chip prototype products before the spring of 2025. Large scale production will be undertaken by contract manufacturers, and the first batch of mass production is expected to begin in the autumn of 2025.
Arm will bear the initial development costs, which are expected to reach hundreds of billions of yen, and will be funded by SoftBank Group. After establishing a large-scale production system, Arm's AI chip business may be spun off and placed under SoftBank Group's departments, as SoftBank holds a total of 90% stake in Arm and has negotiated with TSMC to ensure production capacity.
Arm is an important player in the global semiconductor industry, known for its energy-efficient architecture and occupying over 90% of the global market share in the smartphone chip field. SoftBank acquired Arm for $32 billion in 2016, leading it to list on the US stock market in September 2023.
Arm announced last week that its revenue for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2024 was $928 million, a 47% increase year-on-year. The adjusted operating profit for the fourth quarter was $391 million, and it predicted that its revenue for the first quarter of fiscal year 2025 would reach $875 million to $925 million, with an estimated annual revenue of $3.8 billion to $4.1 billion.
According to Canadian Advantage Research, the current market size of AI chips is estimated to be $30 billion, expected to exceed $100 billion by 2029, and over $200 billion by 2032. Although NVIDIA currently holds an absolute leadership position in the field of AI chips, it cannot meet the growing demand.
Sun Zhengyi, founder of SoftBank Group, sees the opportunities brought by the wave of artificial intelligence and has identified the AI field as a key development direction. He is seeking to raise $100 billion in funds to establish an AI chip enterprise and compete with Nvidia.
