Samsung Display is one of Apple's partners, providing display components for various Apple products. According to reports, Samsung is developing new OLED panel materials for Apple's next-generation iPhone 16 series.
According to public information, the OLED material group consists of a luminescent layer and a common layer, such as a dopant (luminescent body), a main body (luminescent layer), red (R), green (G), and blue (B). These materials are composed of relatively special organic materials, which can be divided into four types according to their structures, namely single-layer devices, double-layer devices, three-layer devices, and multi-layer devices.
According to the news, Samsung monitors will use a material group called M12, which is also used by Samsung on its foldable smartphones. Previously, M12 was used in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models, while the iPhone 14 and Plus used the early M11 material set.
It is predicted that Apple may skip M13 and adopt more advanced M14 materials next year. The report points out that this is a set of materials specifically developed for Apple and is expected to be applied to the iPhone 16 series released next year. Of course, Samsung displays that other customers, such as Samsung Electronics, still use M13 materials.
In addition to material development, Samsung Display also plans to expand OLED panel production capacity. The company recently announced an investment of 4.1 trillion Korean won by 2026 to upgrade the Yashan Park production line, which produces LED OLED panels for tablets, laptops, and other IT devices.
