According to foreign media reports, Samsung SDI has confirmed that it and General Motors will establish a new joint venture battery factory in New City of Carlisle, Indiana.
Samsung SDI stated that the joint venture factory covers an area of approximately 2.65 million square meters, equivalent to the size of 390 standard football fields. After the completion of the production facilities, both parties are expected to create approximately 1700 jobs.
Samsung SDI jointly announced with General Motors in April that it will invest over $3 billion to establish a battery factory with an annual production capacity of over 30GWh, with the goal of achieving mass production by 2026. General Motors Chairman and CEO Mary Barbara once stated that the batteries jointly developed by the two companies will help General Motors increase its annual production capacity of electric vehicles in North America to over 1 million units.
Samsung SDI has previously announced the establishment of a joint venture battery factory with Stellantis, the world's fourth largest vehicle manufacturer, in the United States. The factory will start production in 2025 with an annual production capacity of 23GWh. It is worth mentioning that this factory is also located in Indiana.
Through the construction of these joint venture battery factories, Samsung SDI will further strengthen its competitiveness in the field of batteries and electric vehicles. At the same time, this also reflects General Motors' important initiatives in promoting its electrification strategy, aiming to meet the growing demand for electric vehicles in the market and establish a strong electric vehicle production base in North America. With the production of these factories, it is expected to have a positive impact on the job market and bring new opportunities for local economic development.
